Medan is one of the many tourist destinations in Indonesia. It is the capital city of North Sumatra and the largest city in Sumatra. The city’s population is about 3million people.
Some of the places of interest in Medan Tourism are Maimoon Palace, Mesjid Raya, Sri Mariammam Temple, Vihara Gunung Timur, Borobudur Temple, Medan Zoo, and Medan Swimming Pool. The Maimoon Palace, built in 1886 by the Sultan of Deli, is open to the public. The entrance fee is quite cheap. On Jalan Sisingamangaraja, not far from the Maimoon Palace, is Mesjid Raya, which was built in 1906. This mosque has an impressive dome of the Moorish style. Located 10 minutes from the mosque is the Sri Mariammam Temple. This Hindu temple was built in 1884. About 500 meters south of Sri Mariammam Temple is a Taoist temple called Vihara Gunung Timur. This temple is said to be the largest Chinese temple in Indonesia. Borobudur Temple is a Buddhist temple and is located on Jalan Imam Bonjol. If you need to relax, you can go to Medan Swimming Pool, located also on Jalan Sisingamangaraja and a long block down from Mesjid Raya. The swimming pool was expanded by the Dutch in 1939 and renovated by the Medan government in the early 1970’s. Entrance fee to the pool is Rp 6,000. Medan Zoo is a fairly rundown zoo located 10 kilometers from the Medan city center. The zoo has on display 86 different species of animals including Orangutan, Sumatran tigers and elephants.
The airport of Medan is called Polonia which is located 5 kilometers from Medan’s city center. From the airport to the city center it costs Rp35,000 by taxi. The airplane flight from Jakarta to Medan takes about 2 hours. Medan Tourism
